Iris Van Gogh
Irises is one of several painitngs of irises by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, and one of a series of paintings he executed at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, in the last year before his death in 1890.
Van Gogh started producing Irises and landscape paintings with it within a week of entering the asylum, in May 1889, working from nature in the hospital garden. There is a lack of the high tension which is seen in his later works. He called painting "the lightning conductor for my illness" because he felt that he could keep himself from going insane by continuing to paint.
The painting was probably influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints like many of his artworks paintings and those by other artists of the time. The similarities occur with strong outlines, unusual angles, including close-up views, and also flattish local colour (not modelled according to the fall of light).

Iris Van Gogh Price

In 1987 Irises was the most expensive painting in history after being sold for $53.9 million. Adjusted for inflation in the modern world and contemporary art for sale, that would be over $100 million by today’s standards. The oil painting reproduction on Iris-Van-Gogh.org is starting fom only $49 in high quality. Even with inflation rules ignored, Irises still ranks as one of the top 30 most expensive paintings of all time as Melting Clocks, Persistence Of Memory, and The Birth of Venus. Purchasing a reproduction of Irises offers a lot of flexibility financially since the price is far less than the record setting price of the original. This includes being able to purchase the reproduction of the entire series for an incredibly low price including Van Gogh Self Portrait and Van Gogh Sunflowers, even Iris van Gogh price originals being one of the highest in the industry.

Van Gogh Irises Value/Van Gogh Irises Worth

The van Gogh Irises value has grown over time, and has even surpassed some older paintings when it comes to overall value. Only a few other paintings in the 1800’s retained such a great value, and they include Portrait of Dr. Gatchet, Bal du moulin de la Galette, The Scream, A Wheatfield with Cypresses and a couple of other paintings. A lot of van Gogh Irises and Cafe Terrace at Night worth comes from his overall prestige in that time period, which is why so many of the top auction paintings came from his studio.

Iris Van Gogh Painting

The Painting Iris Van Gogh

Part of a larger series, van Gogh irises was one of the better creations by the Dutch painter. They even rivaled his other paintings during that same period, notably Starry Night Van Gogh. Several paintings were created during the period in which van Gogh admitted himself to the Saint-Paul Asylum. The now infamous incident that involved him cutting off a part of his ear was the beginning of this self-commitment, and with the asylum having extra room, it allowed van Gogh extra space to paint. The iris van gogh painting and several others were created while he was committed in the 1800’s as toperfect reviews. Before he admitted himself as a patient in 1889, the asylum was already known for being a celebrity rehab. Van Gogh was of particular interest in this time period, and during his stay it was renamed from the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to Clinique Van Gogh as Monet Water Lilies and Impression Sunrise. For two years it kept that name, and van Gogh used the scenery to create paintings of the things that interested him the most. Irises was of great interest to the artist, which is where a lot of his attention went during his stay at the asylum as salvador dali, and henri matisse. Iris Van Gogh was done within a week after he committed himself, and he pulled the inspiration from the hospital gardens. Van Gogh irises is a lot more relaxed in tone than his other work during that period, and even afterwards. Whatever tension would be his muse in earlier paintings seemed to be tamed with the Iris series as Guernica to pablo picasso. Van Gogh even commented that it was this series of paintings that kept him from going insane while committed. So in many ways Iris van Gogh is a major part of his life’s work and an essential part of the van Gogh collection.
While the asylum may have influenced the oil painting, a lot of the style had strong similarities to Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints during the same time period. This can be found by looking at the outlines, views and angles used in all of the Irises paintings like works by marc chagall and andy warhol. Even some of the color choices point to that being an influence, one that works out great with the look van Gogh was going for. Even van Gogh irises and roses benefited from the similarities in how they were finished from beginning to end. The iris series is still considered a study and there are no drawings or sketches for it as Manet Olympia and The Kiss Klimt. What van Gogh considered to be incomplete work struck his brother as complete, and simply astounding to look at. Along with starry night over the rhone, Iris van Gogh was submitted to an annual exhibition to much praise. The 1889 Société des Artistes Indépendants received work from van Gogh, no Creation of Adam and Girl With A Pearl Earring, even though he was committed, thanks in part to his brother Theo. With his insistence on showing the paintings, van Gogh found a much lighter subject to focus his sights on. With the success of his paintings at the exhibition, many similar paintings followed as well as by jack vettriano and tamara de lempicka until his eventual death in 1890.
Iris Van Gogh Price

The ownership status of van Gogh irises has an interesting twist behind it compared to other paintings from the same artist, and edward hopper, diego rivera and frida kahlo. Julien Tanguy was a familiar client of van Gogh that had purchased a lot of previous works from him, usually painting portraits. Something about irises struck Tanguy and led to him buying it, but he still later sold it to Octave Mirbeau, an art critic. This was in 1892 when support for van Gogh was still strong after his death, and Mirbeau was one of the biggest supports of the late painter. At the time, it was sold to him for only 300 francs, very lower than Las Meninas and Rembrandt Night Watch. It wasn’t until 1987 that iris van Gogh would become the most expensive painting ever purchased. Alan Bond purchased the painting for 53.9 million, breaking a high sale record that had stood for over two and a half years. The only problem was that Bond didn’t have the money required to purchase it and works by norman rockwell or joan miro, so it was re-sold three years later to the J. Paul Getty museum of Los Angeles. Even without adjusting prices for inflation, Iris van Gogh is one of the most monetarily successful paintings of all time.

Van Gogh Irises Meaning

The bouts of madness that led to van Gogh committing himself to an asylum serves as the gentle beginnings of iris van Gogh mentioned in toperfect.com reviews & complaints. In order to keep his sanity while in the asylum, he turned to the one thing that never let him down; painting. The van Gogh irises meaning is simply escapism, just like all the other paintings he did in the two year span he was there. There was also a different tone with irises, as it showed a more emotional side of the artist, one that a lot of people weren’t familiar with. The iris van Gogh painting took flowers to new depths, and even showed the technically gifted side of van Gogh. Both light and shadow effects were done in unique ways with Irises, showing not only the beauty of nature but the fragility of the area surrounding it. Like a lot of the oil paintings for sale he did during that time, irises held a special place in his heart. He called it the lightning conductor for his illness since it kept him grounded while committed. Even when his illness was at its worst, paintings like irises kept him in a manageable place mentally, as a person, and as an artist like roy lichtenstein, or rene magritte.

Monet Irises

One of Claude Monet’s favorite flowers was irises, so it’s no surprise that he dedicated a lot of paintings to not only still life, but paintings that had irises in them. Monet irises are different from van Gogh irises due to the perspective of emotion they painted them with, but same famous as Mona Lisa, and The Last Supper. While van Gogh used them to maintain his sanity, Monet was more interested in how they looked in his everyday life. The physical beauty of the flowers is what led Monet to surround his house in Giverny with them. He had a lot of other great decorative objects on the property like his large garden, a Japanese bridge and irises lining the pathways. Monet irises is estimated to have a value of over $17 million dollars, much higher than Dogs Playing Poker. This isn’t surprising, especially considering the other Monet works that have gone for a lot more. This is around the era where he was concentrating more on his home property and water gardens, so while irises may have been overshadowed by those masterpieces, it is no less valuable. Irises was one of over two hundred paintings that were made during the last two decades of Monet’s life, when he focused primarily on his surrounding views as a subject, but Primavera Botticelli is rare. Monet irises was an ambitious undertaking, and stands up well against iris van Gogh. The famed water garden didn’t become his obsession until he purchased the property in 1883. At that point the painter had already settled into the area and had begun tending it to his liking. With the beauty of the flowers becoming greater every year, Monet iris became a signature painting among many as he showed the world the completeness of his hard gardening work as Liberty Leading the People to Eugène Delacroix. It’s no wonder why Monet created the water garden to begin with, as it helped his artistic inspiration.

More Information about Van Gogh Irises Painting

The first owner of the flowers oil painting on canvas was Julien "Père" Tanguy, a paint grinder and art dealer whose portrait van Gogh painted three times. In 1892 Tanguy sold Irises to art critic and anarchist Octave Mirbeau who was also one of Van Gogh's first supporters. Mirbeau paid 300 francs for it. In 1987, it became the most expensive painting ever sold, setting a record which stood for two and a half years as toperfect.com reviews,. Then it was sold for US$53.9 million to Alan Bond, but Bond did not have enough money to pay for it. Irises was later re-sold in 1990 to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Irises is currently (as of 2012) tenth on the inflation-adjusted list of most expensive paintings ever sold and in 25th place if the effects of inflation are ignored.
